Spark in Claude and ChatGPT
Use the AI assistant you already have, in the language you are learning — at your level. Spark knows which words you know, so your assistant can too.
What it does
- Your assistant knows your language, your level and the words you are learning.
- Before it answers in your target language, it checks its reply with Spark and keeps new words to about one in ten — few enough to guess from context.
- It can go through your Spark notes and highlights to give you examples from what you have read.
- In Claude, say "save this to Spark" and the conversation becomes a chat in Spark you can highlight and continue. The words you typed that Spark had as Unknown move to your passive vocabulary.
Who can use it
Learners on Spark Core or Plus, including the free trial. You also need an account with Claude or ChatGPT that can add a custom connector.
Connect Claude
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Name it Spark and paste this address:
https://app.learnwithspark.io/api/mcp - Claude opens Spark. Sign in and choose Allow. Spark shows which app is asking and where you will be sent back.
- Start a new chat and make sure Spark is switched on in it.
The same address works in Claude Code: run claude mcp add --transport http spark https://app.learnwithspark.io/api/mcp, then sign in from /mcp.
Connect ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings and find custom apps or connectors. Depending on your plan you may need to turn on developer mode first.
- Add a custom MCP server named Spark with the address above.
- Sign in to Spark and choose Allow.
In ChatGPT, Spark knows your level, checks replies and reads your notes. Saving chats to Spark is available in Claude.
Things to ask
- "Help me write a short email to my landlord in Spanish, at my level."
- "Go through my Spark notes and tell me the three ideas worth remembering."
- "Let's chat in French about my weekend. Keep it to words I know."
- "Save this to Spark. (In Claude)"
What your assistant can do with Spark
| Action | Reads or changes | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Get my learner profile | Reads | Your learning and native language, your rough level, how many words you know, and the words you are learning now. |
| Check a draft | Reads | The assistant sends a reply it has written; Spark says what share of its words are new to you, and which ones. Nothing is stored. |
| List my notes | Reads | Your highlights and notes in the language you are learning, newest first. |
| Search my notes | Reads | Your highlights and notes about one word or topic. |
| Save this chat (Claude only) | Changes | Only when you ask. Saves the conversation as a chat in Spark, and marks the words you typed that Spark had as Unknown as Known. Claude asks before running it. |
Your data
Your assistant only sees what it asks Spark for through the connection. Drafts it checks are not stored. A conversation is stored only when you ask to save it. We never use your conversations to train any AI model. The details are in our privacy policy.
Disconnect
In Spark, open Profile → Connections and choose Disconnect next to the app. Its access ends at once; to use it again, add the connector and sign in again. You can also remove the connector in your assistant's settings.
If something goes wrong
- It says you need Core or Plus — the connector is part of the paid plans. See pricing.
- The assistant does not seem to use Spark — start a new chat after connecting, and check Spark is switched on for that chat.
- The sign-in link expired — go back to your assistant and connect again; links last ten minutes.
